However, in mid-2019, Kajin Sara Lake in the Manang district gained prominence for possibly being the highest lake in the world, at an elevation of 5,200 meters. Located 24 km from Chame, reaching Kajin Sara Lake requires a challenging 18-hour trek. The lake measures approximately 1,500 meters in length and 600 meters in width.
Locals call Kajin Sara Lake ‘Singar’ and believe it to be the result of melting glaciers, an effect of global warming. Encircled by four magnificent peaks, the lake is a hidden gem waiting to be explored:
- East: Mount Manaslu
- West: Mount Damodar
- South: Mount Lamjung
- North: Mount Peru (also known as Mount Kailash)
Kajin Sara Lake was first officially discovered in August 2019 when Manang’s Mayor Lokendra Ghale and his team used Google Maps to identify an untouched water body at the base of Mount Lamjung Kailash. Upon confirmation by local elders, a group of 30 young trekkers led by Bairu Gurung, along with Nepal’s police force, undertook an expedition to measure the lake’s altitude using GPS, confirming it to be at 5,200 meters. While the Nepali government has not yet officially recognized it as the highest-altitude lake, its allure remains unparalleled.
