🌄 GUPTESHVOR CAVE & Devi’s Falls – The Spiritual & Mysterious Side of Pokhara
Pokhara is the second-largest city of Nepal and one of the most loved destinations for Indian travelers. Known for lakes, mountains, forests, and vibrant culture, Pokhara offers both thrill and spiritual depth.
Among its most fascinating attractions are:
Gupteshwar Mahadev Cave
Devi’s Falls (also called Patale Chhango)
These two sites sit opposite each other—one above ground in roaring power, the other below in mystical silence.
🕉️ Gupteshwar Mahadev Cave – The Sacred Underground Shrine
Located in the Chhorepatan area of Pokhara, Gupteshwar Cave is believed to be over 600 years old. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the cave houses a naturally formed Shiva Lingam that draws spiritual seekers from across Nepal and India.
Spiritual Significance
The cave is known as “Gupteshwar” (Hidden Shiva), symbolizing the concealed divine presence. Devotees believe the Lingam was formally consecrated in 1992 after locals discovered rock formations resembling Lord Shiva.
What to Expect Inside:
A dark tunnel-like descent with staircases
Narrow passages requiring bent walking
A massive cavern with majestic rock formations
A crystal-clear underground pond
A viewpoint where you can hear and see Devi’s Falls flowing into the cave
The cave offers a mix of adventure and devotion—an experience that feels both mysterious and meditative.
💦 Devi’s Falls – The Roaring Beauty of Pokhara
Just 2 km from central Pokhara, Devi’s Falls is a dramatic waterfall fed by the famous Phewa Lake.
Locally called Patale Chhango (meaning “Underworld Waterfall”), the water disappears into a deep underground tunnel nearly 100 feet below the surface and eventually connects to Gupteshwar Cave.
The Story Behind the Name
The waterfall was named after a Swiss tourist named David who tragically lost his life here with his partner. Over time, “David’s Falls” became popularly pronounced as “Devi’s Falls.”
Best Time to Visit:
6 AM to 6 PM (official timings)
Monsoon season for powerful flow
Winter & spring for scenic beauty and misty rainbows
